Companies still running Dynamics AX often talk about the migration decision as something coming. It is not coming. Extended support for AX 2009, AX 2012, and AX 2012 R2 ended in April 2022, and for AX 2012 R3 in January 2023, per Microsoft's published lifecycle. Every AX environment running today is running without security hotfixes from Microsoft.

What "unsupported" actually means operationally

Not that the system stops working. AX environments are famously durable, which is exactly why so many are still running. It means three specific risks accumulate quietly: security patches no longer arrive, the pool of people who can maintain X++ customizations keeps shrinking, and every integration to a modern system gets a little more brittle each year. None of these announce themselves. All of them get more expensive to fix the longer they age.

The real decision is not "upgrade or not"
